Principal’s Message

On 16 August we celebrated Founders’ Day — a day set aside to remember those who Founded our school only a few years ago. The situation being what it was at the time, the school was saved from being on-sold and no longer operating as it had been intended. Thankfully, there were a number of strong and committed people who ensured it remained in the hands of QLD Baptists, and who in so doing, planted the seed that has now taken root and life.

Like a tree or indeed any lifeform, a school needs certain things to thrive. It needs nourishment from the prayers and goodwill of the community, it needs to be tended to and cared for, and needs to be seeded in fertile, enriching, and sustaining soil — that which is full of the nutrients needed for growth, and a soil that enables the tree to grow tall and strong, to live amidst the winds of the world, and yet stay rooted to the good soil.

Our school has been planted in good soil — planted  and based upon a knowledge of, and love for Christ. God’s new and everlasting covenant gives us the strength and courage to face the winds that threaten to change our direction or growth, and to overcome the weeds that try to choke our existence. While God has given us a solid foundation, we need to show our commitment and love of Christ, by tending to this garden, to place a stake beside the plant when it needs support, and to tend to it with loving care.

Our Founders established our school in a strong Foundation, they set up the school to stand with absolute conviction as a Christian school. Christ opened the door to the Kingdom, and they willingly accepted the call. Now as we all take our turn in this garden, we too must cultivate that which we wish to see, and so, it is upon us to create the community that God wants, and that which we seek.

Let us all proclaim the goodness of God but serve others in order that we are the hands of Christ in this community to each and every person. Too many communities fail in their potential as they succumb to individual wants and a lack of attention on the whole. As we celebrate our Founding, I hope that everyone in our community will realise that no one person is more valued than anyone else, and that together we choose to live in community, and in so doing, commit to being a blessing to all others.

I pray that God will help us to remain ever focussed on the Kingdom, and in serving each other as we serve Him.

Founder’s Day

Seussical JR School Musical

Welcome to the whimsical world of Dr Seuss, where Horton the Elephant, Cat in the Hat and all of your favourite Dr Seuss characters come to life onstage in Seussical Jr. Come join Horton the Elephant as he discovers the citizens of Whoville floating on a dust speck. Immerse yourself in the Jungle of Nool during three exciting shows.

Bayside Christian College students will be presenting Seussical Jr at the Hervey Bay Baptist Church on Wednesday the 30th and Thursday 31st of August at 7pm and Saturday the 2nd of September at 2pm.

Never Give Up, Encourage Others, Do Your Best

On Wednesday 9 August, Bayside Christian College had the privilege to host a NED Show for our students in Years P-6. The NED show and its cartoon character strives to teach kids three foundational stepping-stones: Never Give Up, Encourage Others, Do Your Best®.

For over 25 years, they have used yo-yo tricks in school performances. This bit of old-fashioned fun helps to be entertaining and unforgettable in the mind of a child as they share how “NED” learns to never give up, encourage others and do his best. They also shared that while yo-yoing is cool and simple, it’s not always easy. Everyone who learns to yo will make mistakes along the way. Students were told that if they try yo-yoing, it’s important to learn from mistakes and never give up.

Science Week Success!

Last week we celebrated National Science Week. National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology. The theme for this year was Innovation: Powering Future Industries, which incorporates the advancement in technology in all industries, especially using artificial intelligence (AI). Students had a great time viewing our numerous displays and interactive activities that were on offer throughout the week. On Thursday students ran around the school to find the answers in the QR Code Scavenger Hunt. The science week prizes will be drawn at the next school assembly.

Year 7 Science Lightning

Students in Year 7 science were becoming ‘mad scientists’ in class while learning about static electricity. They were experimenting with the Van der Graaf machine to generate ‘lightning’. 

Baking Club

Baking Club provides an opportunity for students to learn how to work safely in the kitchen making either new foods or foods they enjoy. The program is driven totally by what the students would like to make. So far we have made brownies, sushi and pizza!

This week we made toasties. Students designed their own toastie through selection from a range of breads and fillings. After a review of safety instructions when using electrical appliances in general and then more specifically a sandwich press, students practised these skills. Whilst this task seems simple, it is an essential life skill.

Tamara Lunt – Meet the Tutor

Dear Teachers , Parents and Students,

I am delighted to be coming on board at Bayside Christian College as one of the  private Instrumental Tutors. As a brief introduction, I have been living in Hervey Bay for 20 years and have over 30 years experience in tutoring subjects including Violin, Piano, Music Theory, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Mandolin, Recorder & Celtic Harp.

I also have a broad range of experience mentoring children and adults with special needs. Individualising programs to encourage and enhance every student according to their preferences and abilities.

I believe that music is a language of the heart. We are able to express joys and sorrows through music that cannot otherwise be expressed in words.

4Q Maths

Four Quartz has been revising some of our mathematics learning from this term in class. When it’s time to go through the answers together, our clever students are taking charge and teaching the class by talking through the method and answer for each question on the board.

Year 2T Maths Learning

In 2T this term, students have been learning about fractions and how to equally cut up different shapes. One great way that the students did this was by cutting up fairy bread. The students enjoyed this hands on experience to ensure that they were cutting things equally into halves, quarters and eighths. This lesson made it even better as the students got to eat the fairy bread at the end!

Bayside attends the Hervey Bay Vietnam Veterans Day Service

On the 18 August, 14 students had the honour of attending the Hervey Bay Vietnam Veterans Day Service at Freedom Park. This year was of particular significance as it marked the 50th anniversary of the withdrawal of Australian Forces from Vietnam. The students took part in the service by forming the Guard of Honour, attending to the flags and College Captain, Rebekah Nicholls read The Ode. The students then joined the veterans for lunch at the Hervey Bay RSL. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to come together to pay their respects to past and present service men and women, and we thank the Veterans of Australia, Hervey Bay, for inviting us to take part in the service.

Year 6 Market Day

During Week 7 on Thursday 24 August, the Year 6 classes hosted a Market Day for the whole school. A great deal of work in planning across several learning areas including HASS, Maths, English, Technology and Health was needed and planning started from the beginning of this term.

Lots of great thinking and learning went into coming up with ideas and meeting with groups to making sure it was viable. We sold popcorn, sushi, fruit cups, jelly cups, lollies, slushies, drinks, chicken and fried rice, sausage rolls, vegemite scrolls and lots more. Students needed to do a purchase order, and did an amazing advertising campaign including jingles and poster.

We appreciate the support from the whole school community, particularly the parents who were very patient and understanding. Overall, the day was a great success! We were very humbled by the response and extremely proud of the children and thank all who made it possible.

Bayside Barracudas Accepting Applications for 2025

With the trials for 2024 now complete, a selection of students have been offered a place in the program and proceed to the next stage of enrolment into the College.

Applications for 2024 are now closed, but we encourage you to apply for the 2025 intake.

Grade 3 & 4 Junior Gala Day

Friday 25 August saw all the Grade 3s and 4s jump on the bus and travel to the Sports Precinct to compete in friendly competition against other Grade 3s and 4s from other schools in Hervey Bay. Students played Netball, Soccer and OzTag and from all accounts made Bayside proud with awesome manners and great sportsmanship, the coaches said.

Netball

At Gala Day, Bayside had two Netball teams compete. Both teams showed massive improvement throughout the day, and are to be highly commended for their teamwork. Most of our Netball students had never even played Netball in a competitive game situation before Friday and were up against some teams who had many dedicated Netball players. Blue team were up against one such team first up, to which we suffered a defeat. However, all was not lost as we learned some important lessons about the rules, positions, and skills needed to play effectively as a team. Blue Team managed to win all 3 of their other games — the last one by 4 points! Pink Team also showed excellent cooperation and communication throughout their games, but despite an amazing effort in each game, did not finish the day with a win. They did, however, finish the day in high spirits, saying how excited they are to play Netball again next year and how much fun they had on the day. A huge well done to our Netball players!

Soccer

The Year 3s and 4s had a “ball” at soccer on Friday for their Gala Day. We had 3 teams, 2 boy teams and a girls team, and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their time on the field and off the field. The students showed excellent sportsmanship and the girls even created a team cheer “1 2 3 BCC Girls BCC Girls, go Bayside!”. Well done to all players.

OzTag

Bayside Christian College had three teams playing OZ Tag at last Friday’s Year three and four Gala Day Sports event. It was a fun event and we were all blessed by the favourable weather. Our three teams competed against eight different schools from across the district and displayed thoughtful sportsmanship. Some students had fun playing the game for the first time and others enjoyed displaying their skills. It was great watching students run and dodge for a try, or running down other players to tag them. Well done to all our Year Three and Four OzTaggers!

Many thanks must go to the coaches for taking the time out of their busy days to coach students at breaktime and make the day a huge success. Once again, this is another step towards a positive sporting culture at Bayside.

Netball Umpire in our Midst

Congratulations must go to Charlotte Knight who recently obtained her National C Badge Umpiring Accreditation for netball. She needed to complete the Foundation Umpire Education Course and pass the Rules of Netball Exam. Once this was completed Charlotte was required to undergo a Practical Test and was assessed by a panel of badged umpires. She successfully passed her practical test on her first attempt on 31 July 2023. Charlotte is now able to umpire at a variety of levels including State Age Netball Championships and QISSN. Once again, well done.

Champion Basketballer

Brock Wicks trialled for a place in the Hervey Bay Under 14 representative team. He was selected in the Div 2 team. Hervey Bay are affiliated with the Central Queensland Junior Basketball Competition (CQJBC). Since February we’ve travelled to Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Tannum Sands for rep tournaments. Hervey Bay won the overall silver medal from these carnivals. The highlight was defeating Rockhampton by 1 point. Rockhampton are a powerhouse and they don’t normally lose!

In the June school holidays we travelled to Townsville for the state titles. Every game that we played was extremely close but we didn’t take away any medals from the state titles. Brock and the team certainly competed at a high standard and earned the respect of all the teams that we played against from across the state.

In July Brock trialled for a place in the Hervey Bay under 16 representative team. Brock was selected in the team so the journey continues. CQJBC games are played up and down the coast in under 16s rep from November to March with the state titles being in Logan in April 2024.

Brock is loving his basketball and he’s doing really well at every carnival. Brock understands that he’s been given an opportunity and he appreciates being involved and being able to compete at this level. He wants to continue to learn whilst having fun with his mates whether he’s playing for his club or rep side !

Teddy Bears Picnic

Bayside Christian College will be holding a stall and student performances at the annual Condy Park Teddy Bear Picnic. We will have a performance from our Drum Corps and one of our students will be singing. On top of this, we will be giving away prizes (including a GIANT Teddy Bear). We invite you to all come and say hello, and show support to our student performers.
