Principal’s Message

It is truly hard to believe we are at the end of another Term. With every ‘end’ there is a ‘beginning’ and with every ‘beginning’ a necessary ‘end’. Some of these are painful, some joyful, some challenging, but in all of these, we need to hold true to the fact that God knew us from before we were born, He knew all we would need, and that despite our unintentional (or intentional) straying, He loves us, and is here to shepherd us back to His flock.

While this thought should bring us comfort, it will not stop us from feeling the human pain we will feel, nor will it stop the depletion of energy, but it should bring us comfort that we are not alone.

As we approach the upcoming Term holidays, another term has ended, we have all got that little bit older, hopefully a little wiser for our efforts, and closer in our relationship with God. We now have the opportunity to re-charge the batteries, and then set a new and wonderful path to do better in all areas of our lives. These resets are as important for adults as they are students. We all need some time to download the latest firmware, reflect on the software that governs what we do, and get ready to re-boot and perform all that we were created to do.

I wish you all a truly special holiday and pray a blessing for your safety and  safe return. To our wonderful staff, thank you for giving as you do. Your role in providing for our children, is vital to all we do, and to their development. To our parents, thank you for trusting us in this special partnership we share, it takes a village to raise a child, and I fear it now takes a loving and genuinely Christian community to help our young people navigate the ills of society. It is truly a privilege to share in this journey with you all.

May you all share in the joy of this community and return safe and well.

God Bless.

Teddy Bears Picnic

Sunday saw stall holders, performers, rides and of course Teddy Bears come together at Condy Park’s annual Teddy Bears Picnic. Bayside Christian College’s stand showcased the school with information packs, games, chocolate wheel, prizes and a raffle with first prize of a huge teddy. Our Drum Corps took centre stage pumping out a great performance.

It was a great day, with lots of people taking advantage of the perfect weather. You can see all the day’s photos here:

Chappy Corner Chat

As we round the corner of Term 3, I feel the need to bring a word of hope and encouragement in the Lord. Especially to any who may be travelling through challenging times.

As I shared with staff at a recent devotional time, waiting on God can be a challenging concept especially in this ever faster paced world we live in.

Several years ago, I was diagnosed with a condition which meant I was unable to swallow food without considerable pain and discomfort. All my food intake required to be pureed.

It all reached a climax for me while eating at a formal graduation dinner for students, when I choked on a piece of vegetable and ended up in the Emergency Department of Ipswich Hospital.

After consulting with doctors and specialists, I was able to take part in a newly developed operation, which was 100 percent successful for which I am truly thankful.

However, my experience was that I was unable to attend to basic hygiene needs for some time and was laid up in a hospital bed. My body was unable to carry out basic needs like balanced walking, releasing fluid and bowel motions.

The advice from the medical staff was just wait and rest and allow nature to take its course. Something at this time which was foreign to me.

At the time, I was pastoring a small country church which had several people requiring pastoral support as well as working as a chaplain in two schools.

It was during this time of helplessness that God began teaching me something of waiting upon Him, and one which I am continuing to learn.

The next two days became a time of drawing closer to Jesus. Learning to rest myself in His timing as it was completely out of my hands.

Initially there was frustration as there was so much to do, however I began to dwell upon Isaiah 40: 27-31:

That God wasn’t indifferent to my concerns. 27 Why do you say my way is hidden from the Lord, and my just way is passed over by my God?

28 Have you not known and heard. The creator of the ends of the earth neither faints nor is weary.

His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak. And to those who have no might He increases strength.

As I lay there on my hospital bed, I began to rest, not just my body but my heart.

And pondering on these truths, that my heavenly father was present with me right now, and was fully aware of my situation and had heard my plea for a quick recovery and full functioning body.

I learned to quieten my heart and be still. Trusting in His own good time to deliver me according to His perfect plan.

As I reflect on that experience I wouldn’t change it for the world. It made me recognise that when I wait on the Lord, He will strengthen my heart and draw me closer to Himself. His presence, strength and infinite knowledge goes far beyond my own understanding.

30 Even the young people shall faint and be weary and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength.

There was a strong young man in a nearby room who was laid up in bed just like me.

Perhaps today can be a time when I may still my heart in surrender to my loving creator, knowing that in His time and strength we may move forward in confidence and rest.

God bless,
Chappy Karl

Junior School News

As we near the end of Term 3, it is a perfect time to reflect on the exciting events we have experienced and look ahead to what is coming up. This term has been filled with memorable moments, and I am eager to share some highlights and upcoming activities with you.

Term 3 was enriched by our vibrant Book Week celebrations. It was fantastic to see our students diving into the joy of reading through a range of engaging activities and events, from finding hidden rocks around the campus to dressing up as their favourite book characters. This special week sparked a renewed love for literature and encouraged our students to explore new worlds through the pages of their books.

We also had a wonderful time welcoming grandparents and special friends to Bayside. It was a joy to showcase the fantastic work our students have been doing in class and to share meaningful activities with our grandparents and special friends.

Father’s Day

We were excited to honour the remarkable fathers in our community, and invited all fathers to join us for a delicious sausage and bacon sizzle at the front of the Chapel. It’s our way of expressing gratitude for their support and love.

Everyone is busy with assessments and we congratulate all students who are giving their personal best and encourage those who are still working towards their goals. Your hard work and dedication is truly commendable. Prep Open Day on Wednesday, 28 August was an event is packed with excitement and surprises, offering a wonderful opportunity for prospective families to experience what Bayside has to offer.

Get ready for Medieval Day, Friday 13 September, a highly anticipated event where students will step back in time. Students, get your best medieval costumes and join us for a day full of fun and historical exploration. It is the perfect way to end the term with a bang!

As we embrace the arrival of spring, we are looking forward to the new season’s promise of renewal and positivity. Spring’s vibrant blooms and fresh energy inspire us to welcome the changing season with optimism and enthusiasm.

Let us wrap up Term 3, let us celebrate our achievements, and embrace the opportunities ahead. Together, we continue to foster a thriving and supportive learning environment, and we look forward to a remarkable end to the term.

Thank you for your continued support, and here’s to a fantastic conclusion to Term 3!

Holiday Skateboarding Fun!

Digital Literature

This term, students have explored game mechanics and narrative techniques to create their own unique narrative based on a game. Here we see some students doing valuable research for their narratives.

Year 10 English

This Term, the class have read Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare in preparation for their upcoming monologues. Students have loved exploring the ‘old English’ language and deciphering its meaning.

Gala Day Games

The Netball girls played 7 games on Gala Day. This was a lot as they went from one game to the next. The girls did an amazing job and played their best in the hot sun and showed good sportsmanship. They passed the ball to each other in every game and encouraged each other when they felt down. The girls won 3 games and lost 4.

Students represented Bayside Christian College with pride and sportsmanship while playing OZ Tag at this year’s Grade 3/4 Gala Sports Day. We were short on players and students willingly helped each other and played with students from other schools on their team. All students were happy with their contributions, whether it was tagging, getting a good lead on the defence or scoring a try. It was a beautiful day to be out playing OZ Tag and having a heap of fun.

On Friday, 23rd August, our year 3/4 touch players travelled to the athletics fields for Gala Day. On the day we played against Star of the Sea, Xavier Catholic College and Saint James. Our teams played well and demonstrated fantastic teamwork and resilience in some tough matches. Many students scored tries, working together to pass the ball and give everyone a go. Their sportsmanship was commendable on the day, with all students congratulating each other and the opposing team. Well done Bayside!!

Gala Day Soccer was such a fun experience for the three teams we entered into the competition. Mrs Rose, Mrs Farrelly, and Mrs Davis had a wonderful day watching the teams work together and support each other during each of their games. Team 1 played 5 games, and Teams 2 and 3 played 4 games each. The students demonstrated some of their developing soccer skills and did an excellent job of sharing the ball around to let each person on their team have a go.

Team 1 came away with: 1 win, 3 losses, 1 draw;

Team 2 came away with 2 wins, 1 loss, and 1 draw;

and Team 3 came away with 4 wins and a loss

Touch Footy

Students held the school’s name high and made us proud to be from Bayside. We took 2 teams to play touch football at FCAC. Each team played 6 games. Although points weren’t counted, we still recorded winning and losing teams. Both teams won only 1 game, but that doesn’t mean they didn’t have the best time. Most of the students don’t really spend time together at lunchtimes, but what I saw on Gala Day, was new friendships forming, teamwork and students going out of their comfort zones to play a game they have never played before.

We were especially proud of Oliver, who at first refused to play or attend Gala day. In the end, he played 5 games and did not want to come off the field. Lily was pushed to her limits, made tackles/ touches, scored a try and pulled the team together. After sustaining injuries, from the other school making inappropriate tackles, Airlie pulled herself together, learned the rules of the game and played her heart out. It is hard to choose a best player.

With that, the player of the day was Lily Hamilton.

Well done to all who have made the day so easy and enjoyable. It was a tough day, but we all had the best time.

Nurturing Future Innovators: A Journey into Social Entrepreneurship

Over two terms, our students explored the dynamic field of social entrepreneurship, where they learned to address societal issues through innovative business solutions. They began by understanding what it means to be a social entrepreneur, focusing on the importance of social impact over profit.

The students applied this knowledge by creating their own business plans, tackling social issues they were passionate about. This hands-on experience developed their skills in market research, product development, and financial planning, fostering creativity and critical thinking. To deepen their understanding, two guest speakers were invited to share their real-world experiences.

Ms. Monica Upneja, a young entrepreneur from India who successfully established a digital business, spoke to the students via Teams Chat, emphasising the importance of resilience and adaptability in the entrepreneurial journey. Mr. Calvin Marais, a local real estate business owner and a parent of one of our students, visited the school to provide practical guidance on creating effective business plans. He stressed the importance of clear vision, thorough planning, and market understanding while offering insights into common business challenges.

Also, students embraced the concept of a growth mindset by developing plans to revive a failed business. This exercise reinforced the idea that challenges are opportunities for learning and growth. By the end of the course, students not only gained a deep understanding of social entrepreneurship but also acquired the skills and mindset necessary to become future innovators and positive change-makers.

Service Learning

This term, the Year 7 and 8 students from our Service Learning class had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Generations Connect program at Fair Haven Aged Care. Over the course of four weeks, our students engaged with the elderly residents, learning about their lives, sharing stories, and creating joyful memories together. Each weekly visit was filled with fun and meaningful activities that bridged the gap between generations.

Students spent time listening to the residents’ life stories and these conversations allowed our students to gain insights into the past, fostering empathy and a deeper appreciation for the wisdom and resilience of older generations.

The visits were also packed with fun. One memorable activity was a lively paper plane competition, where students and residents teamed up to create and fly their own designs. Bingo was another highlight, with students helping residents play the classic game that brought out the competitive spirit in everyone.

To celebrate the end of our program, we hosted a party where residents played games, shared snacks, and enjoyed each other’s company. It was a heartwarming conclusion to our time together, filled with gratitude and appreciation on both sides.

The Generations Connect program has been a transformative experience for our students. Not only did they have the chance to brighten the days of the residents at Fair Haven, but they also learned valuable life lessons about empathy, respect, and the power of human connection. It was a true demonstration of the spirit of service and the impact that young people can have when they reach out with kindness.

MADD Night

The MADD night held last Friday was a tremendous success showcasing the many talented students at Bayside. Well done to all those who overcame any stagefright and many thanks to all the staff and student helpers.

Year 7/8 Textiles Elective: Sustainability in Action

This semester, the Year 7 and 8 students in the Textiles elective delved into the important topic of sustainability in the textile industry. Through their research, students gained valuable insights into sustainable practices and were tasked with suggesting ways to recycle, reuse, and reduce materials.

Using their newfound knowledge, students designed and constructed a pair of bespoke, elastic-waisted shorts. The shorts were required to be suitable for a Year 7/8 boy or girl, have a specific purpose, and appeal aesthetically to the teenage market.

Alongside the practical component, students developed a comprehensive Design Folio, which included their research, a mindmap, a moodboard, three annotated sketches, a justification of their final design, and a written evaluation of their product.

The end result was a collection of thoughtfully designed shorts that met the criteria, with students displaying impressive creativity and skill. The final products were very pleasing, showcasing not only their understanding of sustainability but also their ability to bring a design to life.

Science Week Prize Winner

Xavier Tillack from 4T was the winner of the Science Week 1st prize. Congratulations Xavier!

Year 7 Transition Day

Students in Year 6 experienced High School for the first-time last week. Students were split into three class groups and given a timetable for the day. They experienced many of the wonderful elective classes, met senior teachers and made new friends. Each student was presented with a Bayside Gift Bag to take home.
