Research Question
To what extent can learning and enjoyable activities be incorporated into a single term of study?
Hypothesis
It is expected that chemistry content, scientific report‑writing skills, and engaging practical activities can be learned simultaneously.
Aim
The aim of this unit was to produce a clear scientific report based on a chemistry experiment and to develop an understanding of how atoms exchange or share electrons to form the wide variety of chemical substances present in the world.
Method
- Detailed notes were recorded throughout lessons.
- Kahoot activities were completed to reinforce key concepts.
- A malodorous chemical reaction was conducted.
- A formal scientific report was written to demonstrate understanding.
- Physical models of chemical compounds were constructed.
- Concepts related to the periodic table were studied.
- Magnesium was ignited to observe its characteristic bright white flame.
- Hydrogen gas was generated and ignited to produce a small audible “pop.”
- Sodium was placed in water to observe its vigorous reaction.
Discussion
It was observed that the chemical structures present in the natural world are highly complex. For example, a single strand of DNA contains hundreds of millions of atoms arranged in a precise sequence. This caused wonder at the greatness of God who made processes of life so amazing. In other experiments, the intense white light emitted during the combustion of magnesium was also found to be particularly striking. Writing in an academic, passive, third‑person style presented a notable challenge for students, but the skill was developed over time.
Conclusion
The hypothesis was supported. Chemistry concepts were successfully learned, scientific writing skills were developed, and the term was experienced as both educational and enjoyable.
