“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
— John 8:32
The world often tells us that freedom means living without limits—doing whatever we want, whenever we want, without anyone telling us otherwise. Yet the freedom promised by God is different. It is not freedom from every boundary, but freedom from everything that enslaves the heart.
When we live according to God’s Word, we are not surrendering our freedom; we are discovering it. His ways protect us from the burdens of guilt, bitterness, fear, comparison and the constant pressure to prove ourselves. God’s boundaries are not prison walls – they are the loving banks of a river, directing our lives towards purpose, peace and flourishing.
Yet many of us struggle to experience that freedom because our lives have become filled with noise. A constant buzz that directs our attention form one thing to the next at a perilous pace.
We fill every quiet moment with something—a screen, a notification, another task, another purchase, another conversation or another commitment. We surround ourselves with activity because silence can feel uncomfortable. But it is in the stillness, that the questions we have avoided begin to surface. Our disappointments and inadequacies become harder to ignore. The emptiness within us becomes more difficult to disguise, and so we add more noise; we do things to seek validation to gain approval from others, and the one to whom we owe our love and thanks is all too often pushed to an early Sunday morning.
I too have been in this space all too often. We seem to seek this ever-growing need to fill every minute or we create a space for the quiet and then never sit and experience these special moments. How many people have purchased the most beautiful outdoor setting, set up a lush garden around it to enjoy and then never sat there to enjoy the beauty and serenity that was there for them. How often do we avoid sitting quietly in the quiet with God.
We pursue things we do not need, approval that cannot sustain us and achievements that never seem to satisfy us for long. We keep filling our lives, yet the void remains. The more we attempt to recover what is missing through the things of this world, the further away peace seems to become.
Perhaps what we have lost cannot be recovered by adding something more. Perhaps it can only be found by becoming still.
The silence we have worked so hard to replace is often the very place in which God meets us. Beneath the noise, the striving and the unnecessary things, His voice remains. He has not moved away from us. We have simply become so accustomed to the noise that we struggle to hear Him.
God does not always compete for our attention by shouting above the chaos. Instead, He gently invites us to step away from it:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
— Psalm 46:10
Stillness is not emptiness. It is the space made available for God.
When we quiet our hearts before Him, we begin to recognise what we have been searching for. The void within us was never meant to be filled by possessions, success, entertainment or the approval of others. It was created for communion with God. Only He can reach the deepest places of the human heart. Only He can restore what the world has exhausted. Only He can give us the peace we have been trying to manufacture for ourselves.
Living in accordance with God does not mean that life will always be easy or silent. It means that we are no longer controlled by the noise. We can put down what we were never meant to carry. We can stop striving to earn the worth that God has already given us. We can release the habits, distractions and desires that promise freedom but quietly become our masters.
True freedom is found when our lives come back into alignment with the One who created us.
Today, resist the urge to fill every empty space. Turn off the noise, even if only for a few minutes. Sit quietly before God without an agenda. Do not rush to speak. Allow your soul to become still enough to listen.
In that stillness, you may discover that God was never absent.
He was there all along—beneath the noise, beyond the distractions and within the space you had been so desperately trying to fill.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Forgive me for the times I have filled my life with noise and unnecessary things in an attempt to satisfy what only You can fulfil. Teach me to become still before You. Help me to release the distractions, burdens and desires that have quietly taken hold of my heart.
Give me the courage to live according to Your Word and to trust that Your ways lead not to restriction, but to freedom. Bring my life back into alignment with Your will. Quiet my restless heart so that I may hear Your voice, experience Your presence and rediscover the peace that is found in You alone.
May I no longer fear the silence, but welcome it as sacred space in which I can meet with You.
Amen.
