Our Year 12 General Mathematics students have been applying mathematics to real-world financial decision-making as they complete Unit 4. Throughout the term, they have investigated how investments grow over time, compared different savings and investment options, and explored the impact of compound interest. They have also analysed loans and annuities, learning how repayment schedules, interest rates and financial planning influence long-term outcomes. These practical skills are invaluable for life beyond school, equipping students to make informed financial decisions in the future. With the external examinations just around the corner, students are now consolidating their understanding through targeted revision, examination practice and problem-solving activities, building confidence as they prepare for the final assessment of their secondary schooling.
In Year 11 Mathematical Methods, students have begun one of the most significant topics in senior mathematics—differentiation. This powerful mathematical tool allows us to investigate rates of change and solve optimisation problems, forming the foundation for many applications in engineering, science, economics and technology. Students have enjoyed discovering how calculus helps explain the changing world around us while developing their analytical and algebraic skills.
Our Year 10 Extension Mathematics students have successfully wrapped up their work on solving quadratic equations using a range of techniques, including factorisation, completing the square and the quadratic formula. They are now beginning the fascinating topic of probability, where they will explore chance, predict outcomes and solve increasingly complex problems involving real-life situations. It is always exciting to see students discover how mathematics can be used to make informed decisions and understand uncertainty.
Across all classes, students continue to demonstrate perseverance, curiosity and a willingness to tackle challenging problems. It has been wonderful to see their growth this term, and I look forward to seeing what they achieve as we continue our mathematical journey together.
